Viral metagenomics on cerebrospinal fluid samples from meningogencephalitis patients

Assessing the performance of Illumina-based metagenomics on 66 consecutive CSFs from adults with meningoencephalitis from a tertiary referral hospital for infectious disease in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam during 2016-2017. Our study showed that sensitive detection of a broad range of viruses in CSF by next/ third-generation sequencing technologies is achievable. A prospective study examining the performance of mNGS against routine diagnosis, in resource-limited settings like Vietnam, is urgently needed.
