资源简介:
In June 1986 the Bureau of Reclamation awarded Dames & Moore a contract to conduct historical archaeology studies as part of the mitigation program for the Regulatory Storage Division (Plan 6) of the Central Arizona Project. Final reports on these studies are being issued in three volumes under the title The Historical Archaeology of Dam Construction Camps in Central Arizona. Volume 1 is a synthesis of the entire project. Volume 3 details laboratory methods. Volume 2 contains descriptions and interpretations of each of the sites studied at the seven localities investigated. This report, Volume 2A, contains site descriptions for sites in the Roosevelt Dam area. Chapter 1 presents a short history of the construction of the dam and a description of our field methodology. Chapter 2 describes and interprets sites in the construction zone. Chapter 3 discusses sites on Government Hill where the U.S. Reclamation Service headquarters were located. Chapter 4 describes and interprets sites in the Newtown (the relocated town of Roosevelt) area, including the Roosevelt Cemetery. The sites along the Roosevelt Power Canal are discussed in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 details our findings at camps where Apache laborers and their families lived. Chapter 7 describes remnants of three historic roads, and Chapter 8 documents five other miscellaneous sites.
