Classroom noise and children's task accuracy, response time and perceived effort

This dataset contains the group-level measurements underlying a three-level meta-analysis of classroom-relevant noise and listening outcomes in school-aged children. It comprises 269 noise-versus-quiet contrasts from 24 studies reported in 25 publications, covering task accuracy, response time and perceived effort. Experimental signal-to-noise ratios range from -20 to +23 dB, and available group ages range from 6 to 13 years. A separate table contains 47 acoustically aligned accuracy–response-time pairs from nine studies. Thirty pairs measure the two outcomes on the same task, while 17 combine speech-perception accuracy with executive-control response time. These pair types do not classify experimental single-task or dual-task designs. The workbook provides condition means, standard deviations and sample sizes, acoustic and age descriptors, indicators for the two sensitivity scopes, and the extracted statistics from which the analysis-ready contrasts were constructed. It also includes the source bibliography, study coverage, 250 risk-of-bias item assessments across 25 assessment units, search-flow counts, and variable and category dictionaries. Bibliographic identifiers connect the tables to the original publications. The database search was completed on 30 March 2026. The data support estimation of noise effects, within-study and between-study signal-to-noise associations, and correspondence among listening outcomes.
