Known global occurrences of Rhacognathus americanus Uhler (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) 2018

This dataset provides the specimen and literature based records of Rhacognathus americanus Uhler (Hemiptera: Pentatomoidae) from North America, in an effort to support the argument that this species has disappeared in Ontario and, apparently, across its entire range. A published account of these records titled "Does it make scents? Making a case for the extirpation, and possibly extinction, of the native stink bug Rhacognathus americanus (Pentatomidae: Asopinae)" occurs in the Journal of the Entomological Society of Ontario. Specimen records were obtained by contacting major collections that occur within the known range of this species. Published accounts are discussed as they relate to a specific occurrence, and occurrences based solely on literature records are also included. The web-based platforms Bugguide.net and iNaturalist were also examined for additional records and, as of 1 September 2018, had no further records than those provided here. A total of 39 occurrences were found, with the earliest record from 1900 and the last record from 1966. As of September 2018, no later records after 1966 were found.
