Nostoc sp. UCD120 is a photosynthetic, nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium that was isolated as a possible cyanobiont from the fresh-water fern Azolla. This free-living, filamentous strain forms heterocysts in the absence of combined nitrogen and fixes nitrogen using a heterocyst-specific Mo-nitrogenase encoded by the nif genes. Nostoc sp. UCD120 is chemoheterotrophic and can use sugars as a carbon source. It can infect the liverwort Blasia using motile hormogonia. Nostoc sp. UCD120 is most similar to the symbiotic strain Nostoc punctiforme PCC 73102 (NCBI:txid272131).
