Metformin is associated with higher levels of short-chain fatty acid-producing and mucin-degrading bacteria of the gut

We examined the association of metformin and gut microbiota composition and diversity in community-dwelling Colombian adults. Our results revealed that metformin modified the association between diabetes and gut microbiota composition. Our results support the hypothesis that metformin shifts the gut microbiota composition through enrichment of SCFA-producing and mucin-degrading bacteria. These shifts in composition may mediate metformin's glycemic and anti-inflammatory properties.
