Mapping and collecting metallic marine debris in Reunion Island

This dataset provides a comprehensive inventory of metallic marine debris collected in coastal reef environments of Reunion Island (Indian Ocean) between 2024 and 2026. Data were collected across eight study sites during two survey phases, with repeated sampling on selected sites to assess protocol efficiency and debris persistence.
Each record includes object typology, material classification, and categorization based on the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD/DCSMM). Geographic coordinates are provided for each detected item.
A total of 4,263 metallic debris items were recorded and removed, representing 838.4 kg. The dataset highlights the predominance of iron-based debris and provides insights into spatial distribution, site-specific characteristics, and the persistence of metallic pollution in tropical coastal ecosystems.
This dataset can be used to assess the distribution, composition, and accumulation dynamics of metallic marine debris, and to support monitoring and management strategies in coral reef environments.
