The bacterial community profiles of the peat column of a Northern raised bog were examined using 454 pyrosequencing targeting the bacterial 16S rRNA genes. the pH of the acidic bog varied between 3 in the peat layers to 5.3 in the bottom clay. The most prominent bacterial lineages in the peat belonged to Acidobacteria.
