资源简介:
Science in Brazil Empire has several distinguished personalities, but often understudied. This article studies one of these characters in the life and work of Frederico Leopoldo César Burlamaque (1803-1866), brigadier, engineer, naturalist, professor at the Military School and director of the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro. By mid-century, his name was commonplace in the Court's scientific associations and institutions. During the period, he was responsible for several projects dedicated to the modernization of agriculture, some of which were implemented by the imperial government. Based on the analysis of primary documentation and historiography, it is argued that Burlamaque was a central actor in nineteenth-century Brazilian science. The dataset below compiled three types of information about Burlamaque: (1) affiliation to learned societies; (2) his bibliography, separated by books and articles; and (3) the references about his work found in non-Brazilian publications.
