From 1864, the State Government subsidised institutions that were established with the object of saving human life, promoting health, temperance or morality, preventing cruelty or vice, or for other philanthropic or humane purposes and were funded by voluntary contributions from the public.The Hospitals and Charities Act 1922 established The Charities Board of Victoria, which was responsible for recommending and contributing funding for particular institutions.This record consists of a ledger of payments made by Treasury to the Charities Board of Victoria.For contingencies submitted by the Accountant of the Board to Treasury for funding, see VPRS 12118 Hospitals and Charities Fund Schedules.
