A method for marking logs with color marking， in which method the logs are marked with a liquid marking paint. That liquid marking color for logs shall contain at least one additive or combination of additives which distinguishes the characteristics of that marking color from marking colors of the same color， as well as from marking colors of a different color， and the presence of which additive or combination of additives is identifiable in the marking color. or by means of sensor means. The method for tracing logs marked with a marking color detects a set comprising a plurality of color-marked logs and identifies from that set those logs whose marking color properties correspond to those of a predetermined marking color.
