资源简介:
Lupus is a long-term illness where the immune system, which normally protects the body, starts attacking healthy tissues instead. This can lead to swelling and damage in different parts of the body, like the skin, joints, lungs, and especially the kidneys. When lupus affects the kidneys, it’s called lupus nephritis. This is a serious complication that can lead to kidney damage or even kidney failure if it’s not treated properly.
To help control inflammation and protect the kidneys, doctors often use a type of medicine called steroids (also known as glucocorticoids). Steroids can work well, but high doses or long-term use can cause problems, such as infections and bone weakening.
Right now, there’s no clear rule about how much steroid to give or for how long. Different doctors and studies use different treatment plans, which makes it hard to know which approach is safest and most effective. In our earlier research, we found that higher doses of steroids were linked to better control of the disease—but they also came with higher risks, like infections or even death. To better understand the safest and most effective way to use steroids in lupus nephritis, we plan to carefully study data from past clinical trials. These trials followed specific treatment plans, so they give us good-quality information. We’ll combine and analyze the results from individual patients to look at how steroid dose and treatment duration affect both success and side effects. Our aim is to find the steroid dose that best controls the disease while keeping patients as safe as possible. This research could lead to better treatment guidelines for people with lupus nephritis and may also help improve care for people with lupus more broadly.
