The invention relates to a stacking device (37)， which is used to stack workpieces (52)， in particular planar workpieces. Said stacking device comprises a plurality of depositing devices (36a-e) for depositing workpieces (52)， an automatic handling device (30)， which can deposit the workpieces (52) on the depositing devices (36a-e)， and an open-loop and/or closed-loop control device (38)， which controls at least the operation of the handling device (30) in an open-loop and/or closed-loop manner. According to the invention， at least some of the depositing devices (36a-e) have one height-adjustable depositing platform (54a， 54b) each， said depositing devices (36a-e) have an idle mode and a depositing mode， and the open-loop and/or closed-loop control device (38) controls said depositing devices (36a-e) in such a way that the depositing device (36a) on which a workpiece (52) should be deposited is in the depositing mode， whereas at least one depositing device (36b) directly adjacent thereto is in the idle mode， a provided depositing region (66) of the depositing device (36a) that is in the depositing mode lying in a depositing plane (68)， which lies above a highest point (58b) of the at least one depositing device (36b) that is in the idle mode.
