Lawrence Lipton hosts a live program of music, poetry, and talk (0:52, 30:14), 1959 October 31: about a lecture he gave at the University of Southern California Medical School (1959 October 14), and an upcoming lecture of his at San Fernando Valley State College, Northridge, California (1959 November 12), and his book The Holy Barbarians, Saint Ike (Dwight Eisenhower, president) and Nick the Knife (Richard Nixon, vice president), Lipton's cancelled trip to Hutchinson, Kansas, the rebirth of an oral culture (30:14), the wisdom of the earth, Hercules and Antaeus, Thomas Jefferson (president), guilt and inocence (39:46); Lipton reads his poetry: "A funky blues for all squares, creeps, and cornballs" (13:20), "The ultimate weapon" (17:21) with music (Jimmy Alonze, percussion, and Paul Fredan, tenor saxophone), "African mirage" (23:22) with music (Alonze and Fredan), "Inquest" (35:52), "I was a poet for the FBI" (41:54). ❧ Tape 149, side 2) Lawrence Lipton continues speaking (0:03), the rat race (4:44), "9 to 5" (6:28) and "Supermarket in California" to Walt Whitman (6:39), the hound and the hare (7:29), cats (11:32), no entertainment license for the Gas House (13:29), poetry (14:57).
