During the more than 2000 years of domestication, the breeding of Jiaobai has delivered cultivars with improved agronomic and economic characteristics, such as biotic and abiotic stress resistance. Successive artificial selection of Zizania-Ustilago complex based on their phenotypes has changed the genomic constitution of the ancestors of modern Ustilago esculenta. And meanwhile, the continuous arms race with multilayed defense systems of plant had triggered U. estulenta to evolve a broad molecular repertoire to establish a compatible interaction with Z. latiforlia. To estimate genomic variations/changes of U. esculenta strains, a T strain isolated from sporidial gall of Longjiao 2 and a MT strain isolated from non-sporulating gall of Suozijiao (the breeding parent of Longjiao2, artificial selection sustained for about ten years), were genome re-sequenced.
