NOCS V2.0 is a 1°×1° global gridded monthly mean dataset of sea surface meteorology and fluxes, derived via optimal interpolation from ICOADS V2.4 shipborne observational data. Its included variables are air temperature, sea surface temperature, sea level pressure, wind speed, specific humidity, cloud cover, sensible heat flux, latent heat flux, shortwave radiation, and longwave radiation. For each grid point, monthly mean values, estimate of random uncertainty, estimate of residual bias uncertainty, and estimate of total uncertainty for all variables are provided. The monthly mean data for each variable are calculated from its daily estimates, and the daily standard deviation for each month is also provided. It should be noted that in regions with extremely sparse observations (e.g., the South China Sea), the uncertainty estimates themselves may be unreliable. The surface meteorological fields have been corrected based on different observation heights and known biases; detailed information can be found in the literature by Berry and Kent. The surface fluxes are calculated from daily surface meteorological parameters, using multiple parameterization schemes (Reed, 1977; Clark et al., 1974; Smith, 1980, 1988).
