Common solid wastes in urban areas include domestic household waste, construction waste, industrial waste, and their mixtures, etc. The rapid urban development has led to the massive generation of solid wastes, which not only occupies substantial land resources but also severely pollutes soil. Monitoring solid wastes using remote sensing images is primarily based on the fact that the temperature of these solid wastes is generally higher than that of surrounding surface features due to their own physico-chemical decomposition processes, thus exhibiting distinct tonal features on thermal infrared images. Based on the shape and color features in remote sensing images, the scale and distribution of solid waste piles can be effectively investigated, the pollution information of solid wastes in cities can be located, and their development trends can be predicted.
