Cyclotella cryptica is a marine photosynthetic diatom originally isolated from West Tisbury Great Pond, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts USA in 1956 by R. Guillard. It was a featured species in the US Department of Energy's Aquatic Species Program as a suitable strain for large-scale production of biofuel from microalgae.The clone of C. cryptica that was chosen for genome sequencing is publically available from Bigelow National Center for Marine Algae and Microbiota under the identifier CCMP 332. The genome of this oleaginous diatom was sequenced to identify the genetic traits that enable substantial accumulation of triacylglycerol, a precursor to biofuel.
