Aspirin (ASP) as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug not only has antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, but also has anti-rheumatic and platelet activation inhibition effects, but the accompanying gastrointestinal adverse effects limit its clinical application. The natural product eugenol (EUG) has significant anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant activities, but chemical instability and irritating odor limit its application. In order to eliminate its side effects, a novel medicinal compound, aspirin eugenol ester (AEE), was generated by esterifying aspirin and eugenol using the prodrug principle. Studies have shown that AEE can reduce the side effects of ASP such as gastrointestinal irritation and overcome the irritating odor and instability of EUG by shielding the carboxyl group of ASP on the basis of maintaining the pharmacological activities of ASP and EUG.AEE, as a new type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, has been proved to have good anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombosis, anti-atherosclerosis, antioxidant, antipyretic, analgesic, and other pharmacological activities. It is in the clinical development stage.
