Right-wing violence after 1989 in German prose: generationality versus intersectionality

General Description This database accompanies the research project Right-wing violence after 1989 in German prose: generationality versus intersectionality, financed by the Polish National Science Centre (NCN, Miniatura, no. 2024/08/X/HS2/00396). The data were identified, catalogued, and analysed by Dominika Gortych. The database structure, including standardisation protocol, was developed collaboratively by Dominika Gortych and Cezary Rosiński. The dataset represents the first structured corpus of contemporary German-language literature produced after 1990, designed to support both historical analysis and digital research in the study of literary representations of violence motivated by right-wing ideology.This phenomenon, characteristic of the period just after the political breakthrough of 1989/1990 and referred to as ‘Baseballschlägerjahre’, has been reflected in the literature mainly in terms of the generational and subcultural experience of East German youth. This framing of the issue, which goes hand in hand with an interest mainly in the perpetrators of violence, is slowly giving way to an intersectional perspective that brings to the fore the experiences of victims representing marginalised groups.The dataset includes 113 prose texts originally published in German between 1990 and 2025. Each record has been assigned a unique identifier and described using 18 standardised metadata fields. These include bibliographic information (author, title, place and date of publication, publisher), the genre classification of the texts and the classification of narrative perspectives (generational, intersectional, other), information on types of violence and their ideological contexts, as well as the texts of publication advertisements and summaries of the most important reviews.All metadata were manually curated and normalised. Personal names have been standardised across the dataset and supplemented with linked Wikidata persistent identifiers where available. Geographical data are annotated with Wikidata URIs for interoperability and future integration into mapping or network analysis tools. Source Identification ProcessThe works were identified through a combination of:(1) Local library searches at the State Library in Berlin (Staatsbibliothek Berlin) and online at the German National Library (Deutsche Nationalbibliothek);(2) An automatic search for relevant entries in perlentaucher.de, which is a digital catalogue of published texts containing references to paratexts and press reviews. The results of this search were verified through manual searches in the GVK catalogue (Gemeinsamer Verbundkatalog) and the catalogue of the German National Library (Deutsche Nationalbibliothek). Analytical valueThis is the first comprehensive dataset of metadata for literary texts selected for their focus on violence motivated by right-wing ideology. The database enables the ideological contexts of this violence in contemporary German prose to be defined (e.g. neo-Nazism, racism, anti-feminism and homophobia), and characterises authors based on biographical and bibliographical data, as well as the conditions of production and reception of the relevant literature. The collected data enable the tracking of relationships between themes in texts, authors and literary institutions. The data also allow a research hypothesis concerning previously undefined trends in contemporary German literature in the context of violence motivated by right-wing ideology to be verified. Data FormatThe database has been published in Terse RDF Triple Language (TTL) with attached metadata and identifiers to ensure greater compliance with FAIR Principles. Licensing and AccessThe dataset is published under the [Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)] license and adheres to the FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). Data are freely available for scholarly reuse with attribution.
