We collected 121 Malaise-trap samples of arthropods at 89 sampling sites in and around the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest and Long-Term Ecological Research site, Oregon, USA in July 2018. The samples were shotgun sequenced and subjected to in-silico PCR to detect arthropod species. The resulting sample by species table was paired with Landsat, LiDAR, and human-activity environmental covariates in a joint species distribution model to interpolate a continuous biodiversity map over 225 km2. We show that it is possible to efficiently fit a joint species distribution model with reasonable predictive performance on large numbers of data-poor species. This approach makes possible the mapping of biodiversity with sufficient spatial resolution to inform local management choices while also being efficient enough to scale up to several thousand square kilometers or more.
