The intentional release of Myxoma virus in Australia during the mid-20th century to control pest European rabbit populations represents an important "natural experiment" providing unique insights into virus adaptation to new hosts and the evolution of virulence. This study used whole genome sequencing of Australian Myxoma virus isolates to reconstruct the phylogenetic history of the epizootic and identify important genetic changes that might alter viral phenotypes since the viruses were first released.
