Primary Aldosteronism: Prevalence, diagnosis and treatment outcome in a tertiary care hospital in Bangladesh

Primary Aldosteronism (PA) Is the most common endocrine cause of secondary hypertension accounting for 5-15% in primary care and 20-30% in referral center. The cardiovascular outcome are often worse in PA compared to age, sex matched essential hypertension. The outcome of PA on targeted treatment is excellent while first line anti-hypertensive medications are often ineffective. There is no existing data on PA prevalence, treatment or outcome from South Asian population. Studies reported that establishment of endocrine hypertension services can bring about substantial improvement in the management of PA. In this project, we established an endocrine hypertension service at BSMMU, the largest tertiary hospital of Bangladesh and at the end of three year this service led to paradigm shift in the detection rate and outcome of PA.
