Artificial soils represent a simplified model of natural soils. Depending on the design, such systems can be used to investigate the influence of a single or a limited number of factors on the soil microbiota and functions. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of soil mineral composition on bacterial community structure, and subsequently to identify processes and microbial drivers of macronutrient cycling. To this end, two artificial soils that only differed in their clay mineral composition, montmorillonite or illite, were used for the metagenomic shotgun sequencing.
