Impact of BMI on IOS measures

We conducted a longitudinal retrospective study to estimate the influence of BMI on impulse oscillometry (IOS) estimates of airway resistance and reactance in children with sickle cell disease (C-SCD). The study period was 2015-2020. We also recruited African-American children with asthma (C-Asthma) who performed IOS within that period. The influence of BMI on IOS estimates was also assessed in C-Asthma. We used generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) to estimate the association between of BMI on IOS measures. The model was adjusted for potential confounders, such as for diagnosis of asthma and use of hydroxyurea in C-SCD, and for gender and for concurrent use of ICS +/-LABA for both study groups. We further compared age, BMI, and IOS estimates between C-SCD and C-Asthma.
