The emergence and dissemination of carbapenem-resistant bacteria is a global public health concern. We performed metagenomic sequencing on 1008 clinical samples from a tertiary hospital in Chongqing, China, to investigate the prevalence and diversity of carbapenem resistance genes. We identified 34 samples that harbored carbapenemases, predominantly OXA-23 (30 samples), followed by KPC (one sample), NDM-1 and VIM-2 (one sample). All of the carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) isolates belonged to sequence type 2 (ST2) and carried the insertion sequence ISAba1 upstream of bla(OXA-23). The genetic context of blaOXA-23 was consistent with Tn2009, a transposon flanked by ISAba1 at both ends.
