VPRS 15040 Register of Surveys Under the Licence and Lease Regulations Mining Statute 1865, Casterton Division, Ararat District

The Mining on Pastoral, Grazing and other Lands Act (known as the Mines Act No 2 1890) provided for the leasing of land for mining purposes which was already under lease under the Lands Act 1884 for pastoral or grazing purposes. This Act allowed holders of miners rights to apply for a lease on such land with the mining warden to adjudicate on their matter. Land was to be surveyed before claims were laid out and compensation paid to the owner.This series is divided into two parts. The first is a register of surveys. Information about the survey is recorded including the lease/licence application number, date survey conducted, area of land applied for, survey fees charged and the locality of the piece of land. There is also a reference to a surveyors' field book. The remarks column has annotations relating to payments and to other surveys which were done for the same applicant. The second part of the register is the survey maps showing the area applied for for lease.VPRS 15040 / P1 was previously registered as Unit 5 of VPRS 449 / P Miscellaneous Registers.
