Healthy children are more likely to develop severe lung injury during influenza A virus (IAV) infection than are healthy adults. In a mouse model of IAV infection, juvenile mice recruit more inflammatory monocytes to the lungs than adult mice. Prevention of monocyte recruitment during IAV infection protects juvenile mice from IAV-induced lung injury and death. The goal of this study was to compare the gene expression profiles of recruited monocytes in juvenile and adult mice infected with IAV to identify characteristics unique to juvenile IAV infection.
