Statistics Norway has conducted several surveys on the use of mass media since 1967. As of 1991, Statistics Norway has conducted quarterly surveys annually with a cross-sectional sample of persons between 9 and 79 years. The purpose of the study is to provide a comprehensive presentation of Norwegians' use of various types of mass media and access to such media.
The media usage survey aims to measure Norwegians' use of various mass media throughout an entire year, and data capture is therefore carried out quarterly throughout the year, with four equal sub-committees per quarter. The interviews are distributed on all weekdays in order to give a picture of seasonal variations in media usage.
Since the purpose of the study is to provide a comprehensive representation of the use of mass media, it is asked about the use of several different media: use and scope of audio media (radio, music playback), film media (television, video, television recording etc.), the Internet, and print media (books, newspapers, magazines, magazines, etc.).
