This dataset for the second BIOL2050 was conducted at the Osgoode Woodlot on Tuesday September 22, 2015. The temperature in the area during the time of the data collection was roughly 24o C with sunny skies and little to no wind. The subject of the dataset was Ulmus or adult Elm trees and their nearest saplings. E.Chau, S.Lam and A.Riyat collected the data for this dataset with S.Govinda recording all of the results. A transect tape was used to collect all of the data. First, an elm tree was randomly selected. The diameter of the trunk of the tree was measured in meters at chest height. The canopy coverage of the tree was then estimated by standing at the base of the tree and glancing up towards sky and looking through a rectangle you make by joining the index and thumb from both hands. The amount of foliage that made up your field of view through the rectangle in comparison to open sky was given a percent value (ex. Half sky and half foliage was given a 50% canopy coverage value). Following canopy coverage, the nearest sapling elm tree was identified. The distance between the adult and the sapling was measured, again using the transect tape and in meters. The diameter of the trunk of the sapling at chest height in meters was also recorded. This process of measuring the DBH (diameter breast height) of the adult & sapling trees as well as the canopy coverage of the adult elm trees was repeated for 9 other adult and sapling pairs and all of the data was recorded in a data table.
