The counting of ecosystem carbon stock is essential to understand quantitatively the global and regional carbon cycles in order to further achieve the target of carbon neutralization. Forest, the largest ecosystem in the world, stores the largest carbon of the terrestrial ecosystems. This dataset collected 2506 records of sample trees biomass data which extracted from 128 studies available between 1981 and 2019. It incorporated 162 woody species (mainly trees) from 43 families and 83 genera and from 144 study sites (155 plots) of 25 provinces in China, covering broad geographical and climatic ranges and various forest types. Biomass data of aboveground (AGB, kg), belowground (BGB, kg) and total (TB, kg), biomass of tree components, as well as diameter at breast height (DBH, cm), tree height (H, m), stand information and environmental factors are included in the dataset. The detailed variables and their information are summarized in this dataset. Such a dataset can be used for the development of biomass allometric functions and biomass extension factors to calculate forest biomass and net primary productivity, as well as to evaluate the carbon pool and its dynamics of Chinese forests. This is a potential contribution to the global database of forest biomass and carbon.
