Country summaries for B-Shapes WP3 media analysis

These summaries of newspaper analyses form the basis of our comparative report 'Deliverable 3.1: Report on the results of the media analysis' from the B-Shapes Horizon project. The time period covered is 2019-2024, between two European elections. The border regions covered are: the Franco-German, Danish-Swedish, Polish-German-Czech and Slovak-Hungarian border regions. For each side of our border region, at least two regional newspapers were selected and searched for key words: eurosceptic* anti-EU, Brussels EU/European Union, Commission, ECJ/(European) Court of Justice (of the European Union) border/border region Different coding software (NVivo, Atlas.ti) was used, but all contributors followed the same coding scheme. The common coding framework had 47 substantive themes [agriculture; border checks/controls; bordering; borderless Europe; commuter/commuting; cooperation; Covid; crime; crisis; cross-border; customs; debordering; duty to Europe; Eastern Europe(an/s); European Union Court of Justice (ECJ); election/campaign; elite/elitist; Erasmus, young people, students, children; EU; €/Euro; European Commission; European Parliament; Fortress Europe; **exit (e.g. Polexit, Brexit…); idea of Europe, more than European Union; identity; (im)migration/immigrant(s); landscape; language; left-wing criticism of EU; local government; political parties/elections; populism; refugees; regional leaders’ names; reparations; resentment; right-wing criticism of EU; Schengen; security; separateness; shopping; solidarity; togetherness; tourism; trust; Western Europe(an/s)]. These substantive codes came on top of meta-analytical codes which covered dimensions such as ‘who speaks?’ in the coded section (e.g. capacity in which they speak; if they are politicians, at what level of governance they operate; and what was their gender), name of newspaper, overall article theme, type of article, and date of publication. The analyses of identified articles were carried out in two tranches: 1) media coverage before the 2024 European elections (by March 2024), and 2) media coverage after the European elections (by July 2024). Some contributors submitted separate updates after the 2024 European elections; others expanded their original analyses.
