Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is a major cause of infectious diarrhoea, causing nearly half a million fatal cases in children under the age of 5 year, mostly from low- and middle-income countries and what has become commonly known as travellersâ diarrhoea. ETEC are defined by their ability to produce a heat-stable (ST)/-labile (LT) toxin and/or possession of colonisation factors (CFs) of which there are over 25 different genetic subtypes.
