Renal epithelial cells were treated with calcium and phosphate with/without a small molecule inhibitor and RNA sequencing was performed. Drastic changes in the cellular transcriptome were observed with calcium and phosphate treatment compared to medium control, calcium and phosphate premixed with inhibitor, and inhibitor control. Alterations enriched in e.g., inflammatory response pathways, extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, cell cycle and proliferation processes and genes involved in tissue homeostasis.
