The Melbourne Olympic Committee was a committee with representation from the State Government of Victoria, the Australian Olympic Federation and the City of Melbourne. It was the lead committee for various sub-committees and task groups that included representation from private business and sporting groups. The bid itself was formally conducted by the Melbourne Olympic Candidature 1996 Ltd.The main objectives of the Melbourne Olympic Committee were to:- achieve Melbourne's nomination by the International Olympic Committee in September 1990,-provide a forum for the various parties contractually involved in supporting or otherwise interested in the bid process and its outcome,- develop broad policy guidelines and strategies to provide overall direction of the tasks required to formulate a successful bid,- act as a co-ordinating mechanism and source of direction for the various resources available for formulating the bid - comprising of the Secretariat, the various sub-committees, task groups, consultants and volunteers,- provide status and prestige to the bid by Melbourne and afford international and local recognition and contact for the various groups active in the bid process,- serve as a unifying element in achieving Australia-wide support for the bid by Melbourne.The records in this series document the administrative and strategic functions of the Committee, including reports, minutes, correspondence, strategies, policies and campaign documents.The Committee ran from November 1988 to September 1990, when the International Olympic Committee announced that Atlanta had won the race for the 1996 Olympics.
