Hohokam Archaeology along the Salt-Gila Aqueduct Central Arizona Project, Volume II: Supplemental Archaeological Survey

This is the second volume in the series of reports on archaeology conducted for the United States Bureau of Reclamation along the route of the Salt-Gila Aqueduct, a component of the Central Arizona Project designed to transport water a distance of 58 miles from east of Phoenix to the vicinity of the Picacho Mountains in Arizona. The project is largely concerned with data recovery at sites identified during previous surveys of the aqueduct alignment. However, as actual construction of the aqueduct began, various realignments and ancillary features became necessary. Intensive (Class 3) surveys were made necessary by realignment of the aqueduct and design of ancillary features after the initial planning phases.

This volume reports the results of intensive archaeological surveys of those areas in which construction was proposed only late in the planning process. It includes four reports on supplemental surveys conducted for the Salt-Gila Aqueduct (SGA), Central Arizona Project (CAP). The reports are presented individually to avoid confusion regarding survey locations and methods.

Part I, by Carol McCarthy and Earl Sires, discusses the earliest of the supplemental surveys under this contract, involving seven areas associated with Reach 3 of the aqueduct. The surveys were conducted predominantly in the Queen Creek area and immediately north of the Gila River in the vicinity of Florence, Arizona.

Part III, by Richard Ervin, discusses the survey of a proposed materials pit area in and adjacent to the bottom lands of the Gila River. This survey was also associated with Reach 3 construction.
