We carried out four workshops with a selected group of stakeholders (public adminstration, NGOs, farmers’ organizations, producer organizations, research, retail, advisory services). The workshops took place in Switzerland (eight participants), Germany (six participants), Romania (ten participants) and the UK (four participants). Based on the innovation systems analysis (Van Mierlo et al. 2010), participants collectively created matrices that depict structural barriers and enablers for biodiversity conservation in agricultural systems, with a special focus on the role of labour availability for on-farm biodiversity management. During the workshops, participants were introduced to the matrix and made suggestions regarding the addition or removal of system actors and attributes. Identified barriers and enablers were written on notes individually, then placed on the matrix and presented to the group.
