This was community based cross sectional study conducted among Maasai pastoralists within Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Arusha - Tanzania. This was a self reporting interview using WHO Non-Communicable Diseases Stepwise approach surveillance (STEPS) with additional questions to account for cultural diet of Maasai in Tanzania. The questionnaire included; social demographic information (age gender, income etc), data on life style (physical activity, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, dietary intake) and relevant family history information was collected from each participant through self-reporting. The quantity of red meat consumed, anthropometric, and BP were measured. Samples of blood glucose and the total cholesterol levels were collected and tested. The amount of red meat consumed was estimated using adult meat portion measurement charts (adopted from Tanzania food composition table - available online) after self-reporting.
