This record series comprises general correspondence relating to the establishment, constitution and maintenance of street tramways.The Governor-in Council, in accordance with the powers conferred by the Tramways Act 1890 (54 Vict. No. 1148) Part 2, section 5, and in compliance with an Agreement dated 24 February 1910 with the Municipalities on the one hand and the Melbourne Electric Supply Company Limited on the other, and an amendment to the Agreement dated 25 May 1910, between the same parties, empowered those Councils to delegate the authority conferred by an Order in Council published in the Government Gazette of 10 November 1909, to construct and maintain certain tramways in the Municipal Districts of the Town of Geelong, and the Borough of Geelong West, and the Borough of Newtown and Chilwell to the Melbourne Electric Supply Company Limited.Tramways were operated in Geelong by the Melbourne Electric Supply Company Limited from 1912 to 1930, and then by the State Electricity Commission until 1956, when they were replaced by privately owned buses. correspondence dates from 15 November 1906 to 5 February 1917.
