NASA has supported “coarsening in solid–liquid mixtures” (CSLM) experiments, performed in microgravity on the International Space Station (ISS), with greatly reduced sedimentation rate in partially molten alloys. CSLM experimental data are stored in NASA’s Physical Sciences Informatics (PSI). Microgravity experiments offer a unique opportunity to test existing numerical modeling and theories of phase coarsening.
The objective of this research is to test existing numerical modeling methods for simulation of the microstructure evolution that occurs during phase coarsening, using experimental data for Sn-Pb mixtures currently held in PSI.
