Its predecessor was the European Co-operation in Science and Technology (COST) project, and the organization was founded in 1975. Its core objectives include developing numerical methodologies for medium-range weather forecasting, providing forecasting services to member states, conducting scientific and technological research to enhance forecasting capabilities, and accumulating meteorological data. All data assimilation and forecasting systems of ECMWF are built upon the Earth system models it has independently developed. ERA-Interim is a global atmospheric reanalysis product developed by ECMWF, which was launched in 1979.
