Total length of public roads in China 2008-2023

China’s urban and economic development was tied to the enhancement of its road system. Since 2008, the scale of its public road network has been on an ascending trend, reaching 5.44 million kilometers by 2023. China’s road networkChina's road network is divided into five main types of roads, namely national roads, provincial roads, county roads, township roads, and village roads. As of 2022, the country’s national roads measured approximately 384,000 kilometers while the township roads spanned over 1.24 million kilometers. On average, China's road network density exceeded 56.6 kilometers per 100 square kilometers in 2023. Daily commute on Chinese roadsChina's rapid economic growth has also led to a dramatic increase in daily traffic volumes. However, the number of passengers on public road transport has been on the decline since 2012 and reached a new low of only around 3.55 billion in 2022, mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic that disrupted inter-and intra-city travel.

中国之城市与经济发展，与道路交通系统的完善息息相关。自2008年以来，我国公共道路网络规模持续增长，至2023年已达到544万公里的里程碑。我国道路网络分为五大主要类型，即国道、省道、县道、乡道及村道。截至2022年，我国的国道总长度约为38.4万公里，而乡道长度则超过124万公里。平均而言，2023年我国道路网络密度超过每100平方公里56.6公里的标准。伴随着我国经济的快速增长，日常交通流量亦呈现显著增长。然而，自2012年起，公共交通道路上的乘客数量便开始下滑，并于2022年降至约35.5亿人次的新低，这一变化主要归因于COVID-19大流行对城际及城内旅行的冲击。
