This register contains a summary of special leases of scrub land in land districts controlled by the Maitland Land Board.Under the Crown Lands Act of 1884 (48 Vic. No.18) lands wholly or partly covered with scrub or noxious undergrowth could be declared 'scrub lands' and could be leased by auction or tender or upon application, for a period not exceeding twenty-one years. Conditions of a scrub lease included the need for the holder to take steps to destroy the scrub and noxious vegetation and subsequently keep the land free from such growth.This register records information such as: name of applicant, area applied for, situation and description of land, conditions as to clearing, term of lease, rent per sections (for the first five years, second five year period and third five year period), date of appraisement of rent by Local Land Board, rent forgone, inquiry as to fulfilment of conditions, result of inquiry, date of inquiry, conversion and resumption, designation of holding on which land situated, recommendation by Board, area converted, date of resumption and conversion, folio of Board Minute book, and any further remarks.The register is arranged by an annual and numeric numbering system. In the front of the register is an alphabetical index by applicants' surnames.Department of Lands circular 12/1935 states that by 31 December 1935 bound registers should be replaced by a card system.
