brief description
This dataset is a result of data collection and data coding procedure described in detail in the article entitled "Tracking the development of hate propaganda against heresy in Europe before the inquisition through a hypergraph representation".
First, we identified textual sources from the period 1000–1150 that discuss specific instances of Christian religious non-conformism attracting followers, arriving at the total of 40 texts, which represent the near-totality of extant sources meeting the just mentioned selection criteria. Second, data collector 1 read the passages on heresy in all the sources and manually collected all derogatory attributions (n=338). Third, data collector 1 and 2 developed 15 derogatory connotations (negative evaulative meaning) to capture the broader, context-dependent meaning associated with the attributions. Third, we applied an independent double-coding process to categorize the attributions into these derogatory connotations. The relationship between attributions and connotations was defined as 1:N, because negative attributions often have multiple connotations. Finally the two coders two coders discussed the disagreements (n=139), and reached a mutual agreement in all cases.
