Modals in Scientific Text (MiST)

In scientific writing, modal verbs are a prevalent linguistic tool for hedging, yet they can also be used to express capability. Therefore, decoding their functions is crucial for tasks such as information extraction from scientific texts. MiST covers papers from five scientific disciplines: computational linguistics, materials science, agriculture, computer science, and geoscience, and contains 3,737 manually annotated instances of modal verbs.
