Live specimens (n=5) were preserved in RNAlater and stored at -80ºC. Eye and light organ (photophores) tissue replicates were carefully dissected and total RNA was discretely extracted from tissues and sequenced across an Illumina HiSeq4000. Raw sequencing data was used to generate tissue specific reference assemblies (eye and photophores) and used to investigate extraocular photosensitivity of the light organs and compare visual, rhadomeric opsins diversity to the ocular (eye) tissues.
