Advanced batteries with increased energy density and safety are essential to decarbonisation and the clean economy. Solid-state Li-ion batteries (SSBs) have a higher energy density compared to current lithium-ion batteries in terms of both weight and volume. Solid electrolytes (SEs) within SSBs provide enhanced safety compared to flammable liquid electrolytes. However, SEs suffer from cracking and other mechanical failures during their operation that limit their lifespan. The purpose of this experiment will be to visualise the lithium movement through a sulfide-based SE with neutron tomography. Utilizing various isotopes of Li, some which absorb neutrons and others that do not, we can gain insight to the Li-ion diffusion in a SE.
