On 2 July 2025 at 13:12 UTC a wildfire started north of the village Achlia in Crete island 12 Km east-northeast from the city of Ierapetra. The fire expanded rapidly due to the strong winds and threatened the settlements of Agia Fotia, Achlia, Galini, Ferma and Koutsounari. Residents of these settlements had to be evacuated and a 112 cell-broadcasting message was sent for this purpose. 155 fire fighters with 47 vehicles and 8 ground forces groups along with 7 helicopters were used for fire suppression. Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping was requested to provide fire extent monitoring emergency mapping.
