Atlantic salmon and other salmonid species can harbour Vibrionaceae as a major component of the gut microbiome when reared in sea cages. Observations suggest some members of this family cause a dysbiosis when farmed salmonids are thermally stressed. An improved understanding is required of the biology of salmon associated Vibrionaceae and how they may contribute beneficially and negatively to the welfare and growth of farmed fish. In this study the genetics and distribution of Vibrionaceae in the gut of farmed salmonids was investigated to determine key biological traits.
