The marine-freshwater barrier results in ambiguous nitrogen transformations under distinct environments, though the ammonium assimilation quantitively dominates both terrestrial and marine nitrogen fluxes. Halophilic ammonium-assimilating microbiomes provide a promising approach for solving the blocked nitrogen removal in saline wastewater treatment, but uncertainty stems in the poorly understanding on the salinity threshold of its stability. Here we uncover the response of nitrogen transformations and microbial community robustness to salinity disturbance in the microbiome.
